The country that is popular for its survival instincts and tough nature has been struck with a calamity. And the magnitude of this calamity was enough to shock the whole nation with fear. An earthquake that measured 8.9 on the Richter scale shook Honshu, Japan at 6.30 am according to GMT, causing major upheaval in the country today.
The country’s coastal areas have received a warning of Tsunami. The Pacific tsunami warning center said, that the areas around Japan’s Northern Coastline, that are close to the epicenter may be the ones that will be surely affected by a destructive tsunami.
The epicenter was measured at 3.81o north latitude and 144.5o east latitude. The depth of the epicenter was measured at 20 meters. The magnitude of the quake was such that the residents in Beijing and Tianjin also felt the tremors.
People were seen fleeing from office buildings. Many buildings caught fire in Sendai, northeast city of Japan. A correspondent from Reuters, Linda Seig reported,
“The building shook for what seemed a long time and many people in the newsroom grabbed their helmets and some got under their desks. It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago.”
The reports are also stating that a massive tsunami measuring 5 meters hit the north eastern coast of Japan that has caused a lot of harm to the country. It was reported that the tsunami seemed like a ‘vast wall of water’ taking cars, ships and even buildings with it across the farmlands on the coastal region.
The stock markets have plummeted heavily after this shocking incident. The market value of Yen has fallen to its 17 day low in comparison to the US dollar. The estimate on the damages caused by this earthquake is yet to be ascertained.There are high alert tsunami warnings issued to Russia, Marcus Islands, northern Marianas and a tsunami watch has been issued in Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Micronesia and Hawaii.
The trains and the subways came to a standstill. The intensity of the earthquake was to such a great extent that people experienced powerful aftershocks after the quake and an immediate warning for tsunami was issued.
